Comfort foods are what people typically turn to when they
are upset or anxious. However, these foods are often high in fat. Learning how
to find suitable substitutes for these comfort foods can help you to maintain
your diet and still feel good when times are rough.
* Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup- This is an old favorite up
north. To make this favorite a bit healthier, use low fat cheese, dispense with
the butter on the bread and use skim milk in the soup. This way you can limit
your fat but still enjoy the warmth and tummy satisfying taste of this comfort
food.
* Ice Cream- This treat is a stereotype that is only too
true. I do not know too much that ice cream cannot fix. By buying low fat or
yogurt instead of ice cream, you can have the same effects without the calories
or fat.
* Peanut Butter and Jelly- This is a childhood favorite and
still makes people feel more comfortable and at ease. To make this meal a bit
healthier, use sugar free jelly. Leave the peanut butter full fat because the
fat in peanut butter is generally healthy fats.
* Meatloaf- Most people have strong memories attached to
this fan favorite. If you make this meal out of extra lean beef and turkey,
instead of ground pork, you can help to shave a lot of the fat from it. If you
put cheese in your meatloaf, use the skim or 2% cheese instead of the whole
milk cheese.
* Macaroni and Cheese- This is an easy to make side dish
that many people rely on when they feel bad. If you make it with skim milk and
whole grain macaroni, you can feel even better knowing this is now a healthy
side.
* Tuna Casserole- This sounds healthy as it stands. To make
it really healthy, use skim milk, low fat cheese, tuna in water and whole grain
noodles. This way it is a low fat and high fiber food, not a high fat, low
fiber dinner.
With a little bit of planning and some altering of
traditional recipes, you can enjoy the same things you have always enjoyed, but
healthier. These foods even taste the same in their healthy form as they do in
their full fat form. Trust me on that part, you will never know the difference
between the full fat and the lean foods.
